Maya's 5-Year Letter

Dear Maya,

Maybe it's a second-(and last)-child-thing, but I swear you were a baby only yesterday. And now you are FIVE. A whole hand! You will start kindergarten in a few months. Really, I'm not sure how we got here so quickly!

This year has been a great one for you. You've continued taking dance lessons (ballet and tap), and you constantly impress us with your grace and balance. You had your first dance recital last summer, and we were happily surprised to learn how much you enjoy being in the limelight. For a little girl who can be so shy and quiet in social situations, you really sparkle on the stage. It is such a treat to watch you, and we can't wait for your recital next month!

Academically, you're in your second year at preschool. You're one of the big kids now! We were worried about you last fall, since Niko wouldn't be there with you anymore. We were concerned that you wouldn't speak up, or branch out to make new friends. But, of course, you've blossomed on your own. You've made some great buddies at school, and people seem to be drawn to you and your kind ways. Your best friend at school continues to be Jamie, though there are lots of others you play with, too. You always come home filled with stories to share about what you did and, most importantly, what you ate for snack. You love learning and singing songs and reading books, and your handwriting is really coming along. You can read many simple words now, and are learning new ones by the day. Preschool is a very happy place for you, as it should be!

At home, you've become quite an independent little person. You love choosing your own outfits and dressing yourself, and you've mastered the fine arts of wiping your bottom and brushing your teeth (not simultaneously). Just last week, you even figured out how to swing without anyone pushing you! You actually enjoy doing things like making your bed or tidying up your toys, and it's not uncommon for you to say things like, "I got it!" or "I can do it!" You have a chipper, can-do attitude about everything, and you are an excellent helper around the house.

You and your brother continue to have an amazing relationship, and you tell him (and us) how much you love him every day. In your spare time, you like building with Legos, drawing pictures, dressing up in costumes, singing, dancing, playing with Barbies, or running around outside. You are constantly inventing new games, and your imagination knows no bounds. You like trying new foods, including green smoothies (which your brother won't touch with a ten-foot pole!). You love animals and flowers and pretty much everything found in nature. You take great delight in spotting things like dandelions in the lawn, or cool-looking rocks for your collection. You're just a happy kid, and it's rare to hear you complain about anything.

I'm pretty sure I've said this in every single one of your birthday letters, but it is still true: you are a little beam of sunshine in all of our lives. You are so full of love and happiness and sweetness, and it just radiates out from you! I feel like your name sort of sums you up-- you are warm and sunny like the month of May! Your brother couldn't have asked for a nicer sister, and we couldn't have hoped for a more wonderful little girl. We love you from the top of your head to the tips of your toes, and then some! Happy Birthday, baby girl!!!

Love,
Mommy, Daddy, and Niko
